Learning English with the Flintstones

An exciting narrative about the inventive ways of learning English. Here the role of the teacher is taken on by the Flintstones!


RES.: Do you speak English?
G.A.: English.
RES.: How did you learn it?
G.A.: I learnt it from the TV. From the television. I was watching The Flintstones.
RES: And how did you know the words? What the English words mean?
G.P.: How did I know? When I stayed at home, I used to watch The Flintstones. I watched them saying: "Mama come here” and she was coming here. “Come here.” Come here, come here (in Greek). Then, my husband got me a book, a self-study book. There were books where you read with the Greek characters the English pronunciation.
RES: Okay.
G.A.: And what it means. And the dictionary. And all that, I sat down and I learnt. I learnt. How did I start learning?
RES.: Were these English words written in Greek characters?
G.A.: Yes, it was... there were Greek words: "Come here, Mom (in Greek)" and below: "Come here, mom". But it was Greek. It was written in Greek, you see?
RES.: Okay, okay.
G.A.: And so I was learning. How did I start learning? When I had my first child, okay? I watched TV, of course, and I started watching The Flintstones. I was trying to learn, because… anyway, since you see the same things over and over again… you end up learning them. So, I didn’t have any difficulty in learning English.
