Contact with Canadian society and immigrants’ communities
“Greek introversion”
Man talks about the absence of relations between Greek immigrants and Canadian society.
Α.Κ.: Basically, Hellenism had one problem and which I believe nowadays isn’t to that extent.
During that period, we weren’t… we did live in Montreal, but we weren’t exactly in the society. We were
in a community of Greeks. Therefore, our relationships, if you exclude certain events which used to take
place, which were, I guess, events about May Day, in which we participated along with the French, or some
student rally and so on. There, we could and had some contact with them. Generally, if you exclude the
association here, which also retains many contacts with the local society, ministers used to pay visits
and so on and so on, we didn’t have close relations.
However, I believe that we were slowly able through the association here, the labour association and we
acquired a good name and a good relationship with the local society.
