A woman reports that when she came to Canada, she surprisingly found out that
the advancement and progress she expected wasn’t present.
V.Κ.: I’m a woman… I’m a woman, who hadn’t suffered
any depravation in Greece. I was like this, modern. […] Fashion here made an
extremely bad impression on me. That all the… the stores sold polyester, let’s
say. This came as a shock to me. These I remember. The trip was marvelous. It
was an airplane. Yes. I didn’t have a problem. But the shock I suffered. It
was very… people were very far behind here and the fashion and everything. And
the loneliness I felt. These I remember. The ugly clothes and the loneliness.
Res.: That’s a good answer though.
V.Κ.: But it was the truth, because I was tailored, I
was modern in Greece and when I came here and they were a great many years
behind. Eh… in… […] When I saw the polyester, I lost it, because we didn’t
wear polyester in Greece. That’s why I’m telling you these questions are not
for me. Because I didn’t wear polyester. I wasn’t from a small village not to
know the fashion. Therefore, when I came here, I was shocked.
Res.: But this is interesting as well. Because it’s as
if you lived slightly better in… in Greece?
V.Κ.: I lived much better in Greece.
