The family as a basic vehicle for the preservation of the Greek language
The contribution of the Greek family to maintaining the mother tongue is
highlighted. Recognizing the value of the Greek language for the formation of
their identity and the preservation of their cultural heritage, parents make
every effort to enable their children to learn Greek.
A.M.: The family, the Greek family is remarkable in
this, I think. Αbove all, it is due to the parents this great, really amazing
response for the teaching of the mother tongue, as well as the zeal, desire
and great effort they have made. Despite their either high or very low level
of education -this did not really matter- they were able to perceive that
value. Because, as they used to say in simple terms: "We do not want to lose
contact with our children." But I think, it was something deeper than that.
They realized that something adds to your identity, to your own value, about
how you feel as a human being. And they were aware of this and they pursued
it. They used to say: "The child has to learn to write a letter to his
grandmother". But apart from being emotional and touching, this -I think-
shows something else. They understand what the roots are. Culture and language
must continue. Therefore, there was a lot of effort on the part of the
parents. They were willing to make sacrifices, to give their children a lift
to school and back in the evening, after a long day of work. They were willing
to give money, to get the material needed. Well, I think this attitude was
worthwhile.
