Attitudes to the Lesbian dialect and its shrinkage
The informant comments on the phenomenon of diminution in the Lesbian dialect
('if the glass is small, it is not called potiráki, but potirélli') and its
shrinkage.
RES.: Who do you talk to? Do you talk with anyone here
in Canada the Lesbian dialect?
M.G.: Here in Canada I do not speak the dialect.
Sometimes, some Mytilenean compatriots say a few words just for jokes… I
understand what they say because I know the Lesbian dialect. Lesbian is a
difficult dialect.
RES.: Does it have so many different words? Why do you
say it's a difficult dialect? Does it have so many different words?
M.G.: People cut the words, they make them smaller.
Take for instance this glass. If it's small they do not call it ‘potiráki’,
but they call it ‘potirélli’. But now they do not speak the dialect much.
Maybe now people are different and they do not call it ‘potirélli’, they call
it ‘potiráki’.
