S.Κ.: Yes, I speak and write Greek. I’ve taught Greek
in junior high school at Malcolm Campbell High School and in the afternoon
ones. Here I want to say that when I came to Montreal as a mathematician at
Malcolm Campbell, the junior high school’s principal, miss […] who had a
special affection for Greek civilization, says to me “Look, mister Karaindros,
here there are some seventy percent […] Greeks, children of Greek immigrants.
I’d like to include the… the study of Greek, if it’s possible and if you
accept to teach Greek”. I accepted to teach Greek and following this, we
utilized the… the work which Dr Anna Farmakidou had done, professor Anna
Farmakidou of McGill, who had made some Greek programs and they were teaching
Greek there and we decided to offer two credit courses, one in level grade ten
or secondaire quatre and this program included grammar by Triantafyllides,
along with literature and the second course in eleventh grade was full of…
literature. We used various books. Among these Elias Venezis’s “Aeolian Land”
and so on. And this program began in 1975 and continued until 1987, when the
junior high school closed, but I taught Greek at Ecole Secondaire Mont-Royal
as well.
