A woman who worked as a radio producer at Yannis Daperis radio station talks about the participation of people through the selection of songs.
V.W.M.: I had an eight-hour shift. The first four hours, eight to twelve, I was reading the news or I was taking from the Greek… from the English eh the radio shows, and I was making a small summary of the news. Afterwards the Greek consulate was giving us every day seven-eight minutes the Greek news and I was finishing that shift, whatever, it finished at quarter past twelve and then I had a four-hour shift at the studio where I played music. And there I discovered the Greek music because until then, you can imagine twenty-one years old for me music was Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin… This was progressive rock and I knew nothing about Greek music and slowly I discovered Greek music as well with this four-hour shift. And many, many… members who were listening to the radio show from the community were calling me on the phone, they knew me by then I was… “Little Marina” they were calling me because every time the news ended the microphone sounded “Marina Vlachopoulou” and they knew that the music shift was starting, the second four hours, they were calling me on the phone “Eh little Marina can you play us this song by Ntalaras or this song by Charis Alexiou”. Whatever “We miss Greece, we’ve got nostalgy” and slowly I discovered the Greek music and through the songs which they were asking for and all these people whom I didn’t know but they knew me because I was the voice of Greece.
