Travelling οn the ship “Olympia”
Woman describes the beautiful memories of her journey with the ship.
Ε.C.: What happened! My mum from the moment we reached
the Atlantic was sick. And also George with… with Soula they were the same.
Myself, Thanasis and my dad were alright. So, myself thirteen years old,
without having my mum there to tell me what I can do and what I cannot do… I
had… I was going about across the whole ship.
RES.: What was she called?
Ε.C.: Olympia, Olympia! When we stopped after Pireus,
we went I think, I’m not sure, to Messina I think and we took, there came many
Italians. And they had songs there, there were dances, they had the Miss Italy
contest, I was going everywhere, because I was… I was free. My dad was telling
me “Go”. Where would… what would we do? What could happen within the ship? We
were eating whenever we wanted, we had… I liked the voyage a lot.
RES.: How many days did it take?
Ε.C.: Aah… Fifteen… I think it took twelve days and
then… I liked this voyage, because the sea didn’t bother me, but when we were
leaving Greece, I didn’t like it at all, I wanted… I was crying and telling my
dad “Leave me behind to stay with grandma”. And he of course said no and when
we reached Halifax and I saw from afar some buildings which were all black and
I tell my dad “See? Black buildings! Bad omen! So, let me go back with the
ship now”. And… this.
