A woman reports how women were marrying immigrant men and, in this way, they
were ending up emigrating to Canada as well.
ΑΝ.: My husband I met by arranged marriage. Do you
know what arranged marriage means?
RES.: Yes, of course.
ΑΝ.: Yes, and I met him... The arranged marriage was
probably made in the beginning of August 1973. We got engaged on 15 August,
meaning we got engaged within fifteen days. On 15 September we got married.
And on 20 September I was in Canada. So fast. Everything happened within a
month and a half. The acquaintance, the engagement, the wedding and the voyage
to Canada. It’s funny.
RES.: Yes. But that’s how it was happening.
ΑΝ.: It’s funny... more like unbelievable, because
nowadays these things don’t happen.
RES.: Eh, yes, yes, yes.
ΑΝ.: They don’t happen. Back then though...
RES.: Back then yes.
ΑΝ.: In my age, in my generation, yes. There were so
many young girls then who were leaving Greece in this way. So many. And fast
like that. Very fast, yes. Because I remember when I had gone because then we
were going even through doctors. Things were different, we had to go through
doctors and the doctor would decide if we’re healthy to leave the country and
come here. I remember in the offices we were going to then how many girls we
were and others were telling me “We’re going to Australia”, others were
telling me “I’m going to America”. Others are going to Canada, like myself and
all of them were with their husbands you know who had come down there, they
had become acquainted as well and they were leaving married to Canada.
RES.: Yes. Good!
