A man refers to the difficulty of completing the basic education in Greece.
Res.: And in Greece, up to which grade have you
attended school?
V.Κ.: If I tell you which grade I’ve gone to in school
you won’t believe it. I completed school in night private lessons due to
poverty. I went up to third grade and afterwards, due to the fact that my
father was making me since I was a small child, since seven and eight years
old, go and help with the animals and here and there in agricultural jobs I
had to be going, we used to give out a little lamb every three months, my
father was giving out to the teacher, to a teacher from our village and his
name was Georgiades Giannis, in order to offer me private lessons to learn to
write and read. My life was difficult and this due to poverty and this made us
have to emigrate to live somewhat better and thank God, here where we came,
I’m not saying I found things rosy, easy. It was difficult. But as I told you
before as well, my children grew up and I hadn’t even noticed. My wife was
taking them to soccer, she was taking them to hockey, she was taking them up
north to ski. I was at work morning, noon, night. Because this was the only
way we could live comfortably and educate our children. My wife wasn’t working
afterwards that she had the children and this.
