A man explains the reasons for which he was coerced to leave Egypt.
Μ.P.: The Egyptians were very good people. Very, very
good people. To a point we were of course having a very good time. Why did we
leave? Do you want to know? Of course. The cause was this, when the military
took over. They were justified, we might say, they wanted to make Egypt
Egyptian and not to have two hundred and fifty thousand Greeks, three hundred
and fifty thousand Italians, another two hundred thousand Germans and so on
and so on. We were close to eating them, we might say, a Greek word. You
understood? But what? How did it begin? It started to get into companies and
to say “There ought to be fifty percent Egyptians”. Absolutely, the excess
Europeans had to leave. The fifty became sixty, seventy, eighty, therefore
everybody was starting to leave. Not only the Greeks, but the others as well.
Now, where were the Greeks going? This is the big issue! Australia opened its
doors, many were going over there, others were going over to South Africa, few
to America and some to Canada, like ourselves, Cyprus and Greece. Therefore,
we all left, because it reached ninety and ninety-five percent. Therefore, in
a gentle way, it sent us away and we left.
