Antidictatorial struggle in Montreal

A woman talks about her activity in the antidictatorial struggle.

V.M: From there begins my activity. ‘Makriyannis’ opens, it was a democratic organization, where you had all of us inside, all… whatever we believed. Others were from the communist party, others were from PAM, others were from PAK, others were… various organizations that existed at that time, after the coup. Eh, our job was to bring the homeland issue into the Canadian society. With protests that we organized, protests. Many a time my bed wouldn’t see me for days. I was going, having a shower and leaving. I’d go to work and from there I’d go directly to ‘Makriyannis’ to do the rest. During the period of the junta we worked a lot, eh… so, so much and intensely. We managed to be sending lawyers from here to the various courts which were being held for the eh… as they used to call them “Communists”, for the patriots. We were creating transmitters in order for them to be able to communicate with each other, which, I remember very well, I took from here in Montreal through Germany, I took them to England because I couldn’t go to Greece, they had confiscated my passport because I was a very good kid and I left them there, to mister… to the house of Merkouris, brother of Melina. Eh, then, each Thursday we had, there was coming from Italy ‘Free Greece’, the newspaper which was being circulated at the time by PAM, and my job was along with others to be going and selling the newspaper, in order to make money and send it.
